If Public Live Events are grayed out in Microsoft Teams, read this article.

With Teams live events, users in your organization can broadcast video and meeting content to large online audiences. Teams live events are considered the next version of Skype Meeting Broadcast. It allows the streaming of content to the following groups:

  • Selected users and groups in your organisation
  • Everyone to your organisation
  • Public – Outside your organisation. Users can join anonymously

By default in the global policy, live event scheduling is enabled for Teams users, live captions and subtitles (transcription) is turned off, everyone in the organization can join live events, and the recording setting is set to always record. Users in your organization will get the global policy unless you create and assign a custom policy.

But on my Tenant the option Live Event was not available. The activation worked for me as shown below:

  • Log in to https://admin.teams.microsoft.com with an administrator account, click on Meetings in the menu on the left and select Live events policies.
  • By default you will find a policy called Global (Org-wide default).
    Teams Live Events Default Policies
  • Click on + Add to create a custom policy and give it a name, e.g. EnableLiveEvents.
  • In this policy you activate Allow scheduling and if required also Allow transcription for attendees.
  • At Who can join scheduled live events you choose Everyone in the organization or you can also specify users or groups.
  • At Who can record an event the option Always record is set by default. This setting can be left as it is.
    Live Events Policy
  • Enter the URL https://web.microsoftstream.com/admin to move over to the Stream admin settings and click on Live events in the menu on the left.
  • Move the switch to On and add unrestricted users to allow them to create live event.

Save your newly created policy. After a few minutes you should see the Live Event option in your Teams client under the tab Calendar.

When using teams live events, it should be noted that broadcasting during my tests caused a delay of 20-40 seconds.
