Microsoft has published exciting news about the next generation (v.Next) of SharePoint. First of all: There will be a next on-premises SharePoint Server version. It’s called SharePoint Server 2016. The expected release date is in the second half of this year (probably close to the release date of Office 2016).
Julia White, General Manager for the Office Product Management team, refers in her blog post “Evolution of SharePoint” to the many Office 365 features which were introduced during the last months. Noteworthy are Delve, the Office 365 Video portal and the new Business Intelligence features.
The new SharePoint Server 2016 is designed for Microsofts Software as a Service (SaaS) strategy. Microsoft also invested in hybrid to allow customers to decide their own pace when moving to the cloud. SharePoint 2016 will also deliver rich on-premises capabilities.
More information about SharePoint Server 2016 will be announced at Microsoft Ignite, which will be held on May 4–8, 2015 in Chicago.
