The October 2014 Cumulative Update for SharePoint 2013 contains numerous hotfixes and improvements for SharePoint Foundation 2013 and SharePoint Server 2013. The cumulative update package is multilingual and contains updates for all languages. It's rather a bunch of hotfixes than a "Cumulative Update". That's why you should read the "Before you start" section carefully.

Tasks, sync to Outlook and more features will be removed from Office 365

During the last days I saw various posts where users asked about the following message in their Office 365 tenant:

We're making some changes to SharePoint Online
We will be deprecating the My Tasks page in SharePoint Online over the coming weeks. This page was available on a user’s personal site (About Me > Tasks). If you would like to continue using the My Tasks page, please see the Additional Information link below.
Additionally, the Sync to Outlook button on a SharePoint tasks list will be removed at a later date. If you are currently syncing a SharePoint tasks list to Outlook, you can continue doing so for one year.

What does it mean to you? During the next weeks Microsoft will remove the "Tasks" links on your "About me" page in SharePoint Online. You may recreate the link manually and use this workaround until the full "My Tasks" page will be removed in the second half of 2015 (probably).

Also the functionality to sync SharePoint tasks with Outlook will be removed.

More information: The "Tasks" link and "Sync to Outlook" button are missing from a personal site in SharePoint Online

In addition, Microsoft has retired the SharePoint Online Tags & Notes feature. This means you can no longer create new tags and notes or access existing ones. For a limited time, you may export your existing tags and notes from the SharePoint admin center as CSV.

More information: SharePoint Online Tags & Notes feature retired

What are the alternatives? You may use the SharePoint Newsfeed instead. But this seems to be only a temporary solution, because Microsofts social collaboration strategy is going straight forward to Yammer. So you rather want to consider using Yammer.

SharePoint 2013 Cumulative Updates: September 2014

The September 2014 Cumulative Update for SharePoint 2013 contains numerous hotfixes and improvements for SharePoint Foundation 2013 and SharePoint Server 2013. The cumulative update package is multilingual and contains updates for all languages.

Before you start
Be aware that the cumulative update requires the March Public Update for SharePoint 2013 or Service Pack 1 to be installed.
Install the SharePoint Server 2013 March Public Update and the SharePoint Server 2013 cumulative update if you're using SharePoint Server 2013. The SharePoint Server 2013 cumulative update contains all ressources of SharePoint Foundation 2013.
Install the SharePoint Foundation 2013 March Public Update and the SharePoint Foundation 2013 cumulative update if you're using SharePoint Foundation 2013.
Because of the file size the cumulative update package has been devided in three parts; ubersrv.exe, ubersrv_1.cab and ubersrv_2.cab. You have to put them all in the same folder.

Installation instructions

  • Make sure you already installed and configured the Service Pack 1 or March Public Update for SharePoint 2013.
  • Create a SharePoint Farm Backup.
  • Download all SharePoint Foundation and SharePoint Server packages.
  • Extract the previously downloaded files with a double-click.
  • Click "Continue"
  • Define the path in which you would like to extract the installation binaries and click OK. Use the same destination path for the other files.
  • Run the extracted EXE file as administrator.
  • Accept the license terms and click "Continue".
  • Repeat the previous two steps for the other EXE files in this folder.
  • Apply the updates to each SharePoint server in the farm.
  • As soon as the installation of the cumulative update has finished on all servers, run the SharePoint Configuration Wizard successively on each SharePoint server in the farm.
  • Restart the User Profile Service on affected servers.
